Chapter 24

By the time King Pravus returned to Cumulus, an enormous amount of paperwork – and an even more enormous backlog of meetings – greeted him. Paperwork regarding the liquidation and distribution of cash reserves for rebuilding cities and towns, and for paying overtime for soldiers. And sick pay for those injured in battle, and funerals for those injured quite literally gravely. Not to mention the levying of additional taxes on the rich to support such efforts, which promised to generate more meetings with those so affected. Mountains of paperwork and blabbing to endure, with no end in sight.

It was, as Pravus realized whilst sitting in his oversized chair in his oversized office, staring at oversized stacks of paperwork on his oversized desk, a problem so oversized that he was simply overwhelmed at the thought of solving it.

So he slumped in his chair, staring at it glumly, feeling utterly defeated.

Then came a knock on his door.

“Go away,” he ordered. “No,” he added hastily. “Kill me first, then go away.”

A moment passed, and the door opened. And while Pravus half-hoped it would be an executioner, it was perhaps the only other soul who could lift his spirit. But while the executioner would have lifted his spirit from his body, this particular visitor lifted his spirit without such separation.

“Templeton!” he cried, bolting upright from his chair. And getting on his tippy-toes to make eye contact with his cousin over the tall stacks of paperwork. “Thank god you’re here. I’m afraid I’m dying.”

“Dying?” Templeton asked, his expression immediately aghast.

“Inside,” Pravus clarified, to Templeton’s obvious relief. He gestured at the mounds of work before him. “I can’t do this,” he confessed, feeling a sudden, unfamiliar sensation build up within him. His eyes blurred, and tears – actual tears! – welled up in his eyes, threatening to spill over onto his royal cheeks.

“Cousin!” Templeton gasped, rushing to Pravus’s side and putting a hand on his shoulder. Templeton knelt down before Pravus, gazing up at him with heroic resolve. “If your load is too great, let me have it, my liege!”

Pravus broke out into a smile, touched by Templeton’s offer. And, given the position Templeton had placed himself in, wished quite fervently that Templeton’s offer had involved touching. For Pravus’s load was great. And letting Templeton have it would have brightened his mood considerably. But alas, he merely touched Templeton’s shoulder, giving the man his affection rather than his erection.

“Thank you, dearest cousin,” he replied. “I do think I need help,” he confessed. And it was a most unusual thing for him to say. For he’d spent his life much like his time in the gym, always able to lift the weight no one else could. And never taking more than was safe to handle.

But the crown, while so light on his head at first, had proven far heavier than any weight he’d chosen to bear. Mostly because he hadn’t chosen it. It had chosen him…and for the mere fact that it held no magic for him, it’d become impossibly heavy.
